Ghana Free Zones Authority
Government through the Free Zones Act 1995 (Act 504) established the Ghana Free Zone regime to enable the establishment
of free zones in Ghana for the promotion of economic development; to provide for the regulation of activities in free zones
and for other related purposes. The Ghana Free Zones scheme is designed to promote the processing of goods and services
for export and encourage the development of commercial and service activities at sea and airport areas.
GETP seeks to provide support to GFZA to:
- build institutional capacity.
- develop the first set diagnostics for both the country’s overall SEZ regime and specific SEZ zone/projects; policy and regulatory capacity.
- build planning and development capacity to regularly carry out assessments on needs, opportunities and potential for various zone projects.
- strengthen investment promotion and marketing, and investor aftercare as well as negotiate and coordinate with private developer/operators of Export Promotion Zones (EPZ)
Among others, GETP supports RGD in the establishment, operationalization and implementation of the ORC including identifying, designing, and implementing administrative and institutional changes and streamlining its operations in delivering business registration services. Furthermore, GETP would support the interconnectivity of all agencies related to new business registrations (Registrar General, Ghana Revenue Authority, Social Security, Metropolitan Authority) to create a one-stop shop for business registration. By investing in improving tools and capacity, the Project seeks to achieve a more streamlined business registration procedure to reduce the regulatory burden on foreign and domestic businesses to start up a business and improve business registration efficiency, among others.
